By studying how criminals think, whether driven by obsession, ideology, revenge or opportunity, CPOs can better anticipate hostile actions before they occur.

- The ability to identify, assess and pre-empt potential threats by understanding psychological drivers behind hostile behaviour.

- Threat profiling is the process of identifying individuals or groups who pose a credible risk by analysing their intent, capability and opportunity.

A Psychological Toolkit:

The psychological toolkit consists of key mental skills that enhance threat detection and decision-making under pressure.

- Initiative allows  CPOs to unconsciously sense danger through emotional instincts.

- Pattern recognition is developed by repeated exposure to threat behaviour, which heightens the ability to detect anomalies.

- Emotional detachment is essential for maintaining alertness without falling into paranoia.

Unplanned Attacks and the Element of Surprise

Unplanned attacks are spontaneous, giving no warning or time for preemptive action.

They catch even well-prepared teams off-guard, especially if they're focused on preventing planned threats.

Unlike planned attacks (which often involve surveillance and recognisable patterns), opportunistic attacks are triggered by sudden emotional or environmental factors.

They can come from any direction, at any time, making them harder to anticipate and detect.

Unplanned attacks often happen at close range, in crowded or chaotic situations like street rallies, press conferences, or while entering/leaving a vehicle.

This proximity makes it harder for the team to react effectively and safely.

Planned attacks sometimes leave telltale signs (suspicious behaviour, reconnaissance, unusual vehicles), which allow CP teams to prepare or intervene.

Opportunistic attackers often show no signs until the moment of the attack, so the team might have little or no advance warning.

In the UK, close protection training is regulated by the Security Industry Authority (SIA), which mandates a standardized training course for anyone wishing to become a licensed close protection operative.

This course typically lasts 18 days and covers essential skills such as threat assessment, risk management, conflict management, physical intervention, and route planning. While this program ensures a minimum standard of competence, it is considered a baseline qualification, focusing on compliance rather than advanced operational skills.

In contrast, several other countries, particularly those with extensive security industries or where private security has evolved alongside military or police frameworks, often offer more intensive and specialised close protection training. For example, in countries like Israel, the United States, and some European nations (notably Germany and France), training programs frequently incorporate advanced tactics such as defensive and evasive driving, advanced firearms training, surveillance detection, and even counter-terrorism modules. These programs can last several months and are often structured more like paramilitary courses, designed to prepare operatives for high-risk or complex environments.

The difference in training standards can impact the overall readiness and effectiveness of close protection teams. UK-trained operatives often have solid foundational knowledge but may lack the advanced skills required to operate in complex threat environments.

It is important to note that the UK’s approach reflects the threat environment in the country itself. The UK’s relatively low threat from organised attacks on private individuals means that the SIA’s minimum standard is often sufficient for most domestic protection roles. Nevertheless, as global threats evolve and clients increasingly demand international travel security, there’s a growing recognition that UK operatives may need to seek additional, advanced training to remain competitive and meet client expectations.

Having some understanding of psychology equips CPOs with more than just physical skills, it enhances foresight, judgement, and tactical decision-making in dynamic threat environments.

Psychological insight enables CPOs to detect subtle warning signs, de-escalate volatile situations, and make faster, more informed decisions, as well as improve threat profiling. It provides a critical edge when working in unpredictable, high-stakes environments where human behaviour is both the threat and the solution.

A publicist and fixer play crucial roles in managing the public image and personal affairs of high-profile celebrities. The publicist focuses on crafting and maintaining the celebrity’s brand by handling media relations, coordinating interviews, managing social media presence, and strategically shaping public narratives to enhance reputation and visibility.

The fixer acts as a problem-solver and behind-the-scenes coordinator, swiftly addressing crises, smoothing over scandals, and navigating complex logistical challenges, often working discreetly to protect the celebrity’s privacy and maintain their professional standing. Together, they ensure the celebrity remains in the public eye in a positive light while mitigating risks that could harm their career or personal life.

Situation awareness, behavioural detection, time and distance

Essential Training

To Know a Threat, you Need to Think as a Threat

Behavioural Detection

It is crucial for close protection operatives (CPOs) to be trained in situational awareness because this skill enables them to perceive, understand, and anticipate threats in the environment. By being alert to unusual activity, suspicious individuals, or potential environmental hazards, CPOs can identify risks early and react accordingly.

This proactive approach allows them to make quick, informed decisions that can prevent attacks and keep their principal safe, avoiding situations where the threat might escalate.

Training in behavioural detection is equally important. This involves recognising suspicious or threatening behaviours in people who may pose a danger to the principal. CPOs need to spot pre-attack indicators such as nervousness, scanning the environment, or other forms of suspicious body language. In crowded areas, distinguishing between innocent bystanders and those with malicious intent is vital. By reading non-verbal cues, CPOs can detect aggression or deception that might otherwise go unnoticed and respond effectively to potential threats.

Understanding time and distance is another essential skill for CPOs. Time and distance determine how quickly an operative can react to a threat and how effectively they can create a buffer zone between the principal and the threat. Maintaining the right distance allows for better reaction time, whether that means moving the principal out of harm’s way or confronting the threat directly. Furthermore, understanding how long it takes to move between different points or to evacuate to a safe area ensures the CPO can plan safe routes and manage emergencies efficiently.

By observing subtle cues such as body language, facial expressions, and unusual behaviours, CPOs can assess intent and predict hostile actions. This proactive approach allows for early intervention, enhancing the safety of the principal and preventing incidents rather than simply reacting to them.

Effective behavioural detection not only improves threat assessment accuracy but also contributes to maintaining a secure environment while minimising unnecessary disruptions.

Being unfit as a CPO is unacceptable.

Physical and mental fitness are critical to performing the demanding duties of the role effectively. CPOs must maintain sharp reaction times to respond instantly to sudden threats, attacks, medical emergencies or embarrassing situations.

Physical fitness directly impacts an operative’s situational awareness and stamina, enabling them to stay alert and vigilant during long working hours, often under stressful conditions. Fatigue from poor fitness can lead to slower decision-making, reduced concentration, and impaired judgment, increasing the risk to both the protectee and the team.

Maintaining optimal fitness ensures that CPOs can execute their responsibilities with the speed, endurance, and mental clarity required to safeguard lives.

Executive protection especially celebrity protection can be a very demanding area of the CP industry, and constantly being in the public eye adds pressure.

A thick ski,n along with discretion and loyalty are essential if you are looking to make it your specialist area.

However, their seems to be a trend, especially in the U,S of taking legal action against a principal for several reasons.

Admittedly, there have been a few incidents where you would be justified in reconsidering your employment BUT, to sue your principal goes against everything as a CPO/EPO/Bodyguard stands for.

Where has your discretion and loyalty gone?.

You’ve gone against the NDA you signed, and to make things worse, you are willing to publish very personal, damaging information about your principal.

I hope the out of court settlement is enough to see you into a new career.

The old school era of bodyguarding, when athletes, boxers, and martial artists were the go-to choice for personal protection.

In the 80s, and 90s, it was common to see former sportsmen working in the close protection industry, especially the celebrity circuit. Their physical stature, toughness, and combat skills made them ideal for the profession at that time.

Physical presence mattered and was often enough to deter trouble, and being trained for physical confrontations projected discipline, confidence and dedication. With many coming from tough backgrounds, they also brought their street-wise experience.

Today, physical ability, discipline, confidence, dedication, and even being street-wise are still very important, the industry has matured into something far more sophisticated.

The old boys from the 80s, 90s and even early 2000s have learnt to move forward and adapt to the changes, but maybe some of the new up-and-coming operatives have started to neglect some old-school values.

NOTE
It’s not a point about those coming from combat fighting backgrounds, or being so big the pavement cracks, it’s about old school values and professionalism, even life skills.

We are all very quick to judge those that worked in the industry before it developed into what it is today. But do you not think that sometimes we should flip that upside down and see what the old school brought to the table?

People react to a stimuli at different speeds which can also depend on type of stimuli. Some people react slowly due to a variety of factors including slow processing speed, which can be influenced by brain chemistry, neurological differences, anxiety, fatigue, age and even personality traits.

Processing speed refers to how quickly the brain receives, interprets, and responds to information. People with slower processing speed may take longer to react to stimuli. This can also be the case for decision-making.

High anxiety can also lead to slower reactions as well as a complete freeze response.

Many law enforcement and military units carry out reaction tests which are designed to evaluate the ability to perceive, process, and respond to different threats.

Is this a factor that should be considered in CP training ?

The Level 3 Working as a Close Protection Operative in the Private Security Industry qualification is the "minimum requirement to gain the SIA license".

Is the minimum requirement fit for purpose - a question we see on many groups and forums.

Whether or not that’s the case is a question that will keep coming up.

One thing that is for sure, to move forward in a career in close protection, further personal development is required, as the Level 3 SIA course is just the first step on the ladder.

Situation Awareness and Behavioural Detection are two courses that are an absolute must.

These two courses should then be followed up by the principles of Time and Distance.

You cannot provide adequate protection without them.

In countries which are high-risk environments, yes, providing you abide by that country's firearms laws.

In some countries, only nationals are legally permitted to carry firearms. However, if you’re working on an assignment alongside nationals who are legally armed, it’s important for you to develop solid firearms handling skills. For instance, if the national you’re working with is unable to operate their weapon for any reason, you may need to use it to ensure protection and safety.
